A 35-year-old man died at Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans early Sunday, according to Vermont State Police.
The man, who authorities later identified as Jeffrey Nichols, became unresponsive in the prison’s booking area at 6:32 a.m., state police said in a Sunday press release. Department of Corrections staff provided emergency care and called first responders, according to police, but the man was pronounced dead at the prison at 6:49 a.m.
On Monday, the Department of Corrections said in a press release that “multiple administrations of Narcan,” among other lifesaving measures, were unsuccessful.
The department listed Nichols’ town of residence as Enosburg, while police said Nichols was from Sheldon.
Nichols was arrested “late Friday night in Sheldon on a charge of second degree aggravated domestic assault committed in the presence of a child,” according to state police.
Corrections staff notified state police of the death at 6:57 a.m. Sunday, and state police, the Defender General’s Office and the Department of Corrections are investigating — as is standard protocol in all Vermont prison deaths.
Police said early information “indicates the death is not suspicious, but the circumstances remain under investigation.”
The state’s Chief Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to perform an autopsy. As of Monday morning, a death certificate was not yet available.
Sunday’s death is the 10th in a Vermont prison this year and the second in recent months at Northwest State. In July, 37-year-old Shawn Gardner died at the St. Albans prison. Authorities later said the cause was an accidental overdose involving fentanyl, xylazine and cocaine.
