A 36-year-old Connecticut man died Saturday after skiing off-trail from Stowe Mountain Resort, according to Vermont State Police.
Emergency responders began to search for two skiers after receiving a call at 6:36 p.m. reporting that the skiers had become lost after going off the trail, and one was injured after falling off a cliff.
Police, rescue personnel from Stowe, Colchester and Cambridge, and members of the Army Mountain Warfare School located the skiers in Smugglers Notch State Park, which is adjacent to the ski area, after more than two hours of searching.
The 36-year-old man located at the base of the cliff was found deceased. Police are withholding his name pending notification of next of kin.
The other man, a 35-year-old also from Connecticut, was not injured and was helped out of the woods.
Both men were “avid” skiers and were familiar with the ski area, according to police.
Police say the death does not appear to be suspicious. The exact cause of death is currently unknown, and an autopsy will be completed.
