Editor’s note: This Q&A is one of many VTDigger will run throughout Election Day.
Katharine Montstream, 50, is volunteering at the Burlington polls in Ward 6 this Election Day. She is a Ward 6 resident who voted for Obama in 2008, and said she would do so again this year.
Why is it important to vote?
I think we’re so extraordinarily fortunate that we can vote in this country, where there are places in Africa where women can’t vote. I think it’s remarkable that we can talk openly about who we support as a candidate. Nobody’s going to bomb my house or break in and steal my children. And I think it is hard to comprehend how huge that freedom is.

You’re volunteering here today?
I am.
Why did you decide to volunteer?
I love the process. People asked me, “Oh, you’re going to vote early?” No, I’m not going to vote early. I love Election Day. I remember when I turned 18 in my first presidential election night. I just couldn’t wait. I love the excitement of seeing everyone. It’s just fun. It’s a great day to be out and celebrating this freedom.
What do you think about the role money is playing in campaigns this year?
It’s disturbing. I wish there was a cap because I feel like money can buy votes. And if you have the money to buy huge television ads, I think there should be something that says, “Enough.” So that one candidate can’t win an election based on the money they raise.
What do you think about super PACs? Candidates are not supposed to have direct involvement in these political organizations, which can spend limitless amounts aimed at influencing elections. Is there a problem with that?
I think there is because you can make any ad you want. I think there should be some sort of cap.
Do you think someone who contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars to one of these super PACs, which promote certain candidates, should be allowed to volunteer at polls just like you?
Yeah, if they can actually do it and hide their button and just sign people in. Maybe people will recognize their face, but I suppose that if they come in without trying to influence anything, yeah, why not?
